The Delhi Police chief opined that youngsters living in jhuggis and kacchi colonies, adjacent to colonies of the opulent class, get deviated having seen the lifestyle of the rich that is replete with comfort and opulence. Highlighting the key reasons behind the uptick in crime level in the city, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik pointed out that several inter-related factors like mass immigration of people, socio-economic disparity between different class of population which often results in the ‘frustation’ and tendency to commit crimes amongst the youths is the most potent reason for the hike in the crime rate. Moreover, the crime reported in all major heads like an attempt to murder, dacoity, rape, and riots has also declined along with the incidents of snatching and burglary which nonetheless are covered under minor crimes. As compared to the previous year, fewer crimes of heinous nature were reported in 2018, showing a decline rate of 11.72 per cent.
But though the number of crime cases have escalated, there seems to have been a dip in the number of heinous crimes reported for the same period. Substantiating its claim the Delhi police annual press report said that compared to 2,23,077 cases of crime reported in 2017 a total of 2,36,476 case of crimes were recorded in the national capital in 2018. Based on the report, Delhi police confirmed that it is the sheer size and the heterogeneous nature of capital’s population which is among the prime reasons behind the six per cent hike in the crime rate of the city.
